Day 1 - The Management Role

Every new manager needs to differentiate their old role as a co-worker and their new management role.  This can be particularly challenging if you are managing people who used to be your co-worker.    This module explores the management role in detail.

  • Identify qualities and abilities required for effective management
  • Understand your role and responsibilities as manager
  • Learn to transition from individual contributor to manager
  • Know how to work effectively with a multigenerational workforce

Day 2– Managing the dynamics of your team

As a new manager you will need to manage groups and teams, understanding their norms and development, and the skills required to manage diverse teams. New managers from any discipline will need to gain the tools to appropriately select project teams that work well together and to the ability to harness the abilities/skills of individuals in the team, but also how to enable teams to work cohesively together. 

You will cover:

  • The ‘group as a whole’; theory and practice
  • Dynamics in your team and how to work with them
  • Dynamics ‘below the surface’
  • Overt and covert norms and roles
  • Change processes in groups
  • Compare differences between a ‘group’ and a ‘team’
  • Practical implications of differences between groups and teams for the manager
  • Explain situations when the formation of a group and/or a team would be necessary
  • Discuss the stages of group development and maturity
  • Explain factors which could influence the cohesiveness of work groups
  • Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of cohesive work groups

Day 3 - Performance Management

Quite often new managers are expert in their field, they have proven their sector knowledge/specialist skills, however as new manager the added dimension is how to manage performance of staff, some of whom may have been co-workers previously.

You will cover:

  • Explore tools and strategies for effective performance management
  • Understand and conduct performance planning, facilitation and evaluation
  • Practice the skill of setting goals, providing effective feedback and conducting alignment discussions

Day 4 - Coaching for Performance

As you start out in management  you will need appropriate tools for empowering and getting the best out of your team.  The development of coaching skills is a necessary management skill to ensure that you are able to optimise the talent within your team effectively.

You will cover:

  • What is coaching? How does it differ from ‘managing' or counselling? What coaching is and isn't.
  • Principles of coaching; contracting, practices, values, trust and confidentiality agreements
  • Issues and challenges faced by the in-house coach/manager.
  • The coaching cycle, the coaching process from start to finish of the programme and the coaching process of each session.
  • The GROW Model, a simple model to help define the objectives of the person you are coaching.
  • Conducting a coaching session – utilizing coaching tools/strategies

Day 5 – The Manager as the Developer of others

The most effective manager is one that is able to get the best out of their team.  The manager who understands that their success is integrated into the success of the individuals that they manage.  This module of the programme looks at the management role in terms of the importance of developing others.  

You will cover:

  • What is emotional intelligence? Harnessing E.I in management role
  • Emotional intelligence and the ECQs Emotional intelligence framework
  • The Johari Window
  • Developing Emotionally Intelligent Teams
  • Establishing emotionally intelligent norms
  • The importance of self awareness and self reflection
  • Identifying own skills, values and areas for future development
  • Creating a development plan for another
  • Monitoring development plan
  • Empowering the individual – through effective delegation and development opportunities
  • Creating the learning team through group problem solving - The Learning Team in action

In order to obtain this prestigious and highly recognised qualification you will need to complete written assessments, in addition to attending the five training days.

Should you require this option you will be allocated an e-coach who will work with you to ensure that you are able to successful complete the written assessment.

This qualification route is optional, and is subject to additional registration fees.
