Day 1 - The Management Role

Every new manager needs to differentiate their old role as a co-worker and their new management role.  This can be particularly challenging if you are managing people who used to be your co-worker.    This module explores the management role in detail.

  • Identify the qualities and abilities required for effective management
  • Understand your role and responsibilities as manager
  • Learn to transition from individual contributor to manager
  • Know how to work effectively with a multigenerational workforce

Day 2– Managing the dynamics of your team

As a new manager you will need to manage groups and teams, understanding their norms and development, and the skills required to manage diverse teams. New managers from any discipline will need to gain the tools to appropriately select project teams that work well together and to the ability to harness the abilities/skills of individuals in the team, but also how to enable teams to work cohesively together. 

You will cover:

  • The ‘group as a whole’; theory and practice
  • Dynamics in your team and how to work with them
  • Dynamics ‘below the surface’
  • Overt and covert norms and roles
  • Change processes in groups
  • Compare differences between a ‘group’ and a ‘team’
  • Practical implications of differences between groups and teams for the manager
  • Explain situations when the formation of a group and/or a team would be necessary
  • Discuss the stages of group development and maturity
  • Explain factors which could influence the cohesiveness of work groups
  • Evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of cohesive work groups

Day 3 - Performance Management

Quite often new managers are expert in their field, they have proven their sector knowledge/specialist skills, however as new manager the added dimension is how to manage the performance of staff, some of whom may have been co-workers previously.

You will cover:

  • Explore tools and strategies for effective performance management
  • Understand and conduct performance planning, facilitation and evaluation
  • Practice the skill of setting goals, providing effective feedback and conducting alignment discussions

In order to obtain this prestigious and highly recognised qualification, you will need to complete written assessments, in addition to attending the five training days.

Should you require this option you will be allocated an e-coach who will work with you to ensure that you are able to successfully complete the written assessment.

This qualification route is optional, and is subject to additional registration fees.
